"Deleted Scenes 12.20.07: The Overlooked List - Golden Globes Edition" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-13 04:59:19

Hey everybody it's Rob again and yes this is Deleted Scenes again. And yes again are we looking at my personal picks for The Overlooked List the now-annual column of indiscriminate and frankly random date that details performances and whatever else that I feel are being disregarded by our glorious critics' circles/awards-giving bodies of all kinds. But first a word. Or maybe more than one actually. You see the wonderful Hollywood Foreign Press Association indeed came back with their nominations for the Golden Globes and indeed ignored a great many worthy works this year. This is not to be unexpected as the HFPA and its rich history of questionable nominations (and Pia Zadora worship to boot) can attest. However since it's the end of the year and top-whatever lists are all the rage during the holiday season it's time for a special installment of The Overlooked List. In short here are my personal top 5 what-the-fuck nominations from this year's Golden Globes…5. Pretty much all of the Best Motion Picture – Drama category all right. It wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be and was missing the certain indescribable je ne sais quoi that the pantheon of genre classics have (such as last year's Best Picture Oscar winner not that much but still. Not exactly Best Picture – Drama caliber but enough goodness to be charitable and say all right. (Other films that have been released have shoved down my best-of-the-year list but that's for another column and another day. Moving on.)Or maybe it's just because of the totally unworthy nominee making the inclusion of What in the fuck?Denzel Washington's taste in watches must be absolutely exquisite that's all I have to say.4. Cate Blanchett in Just because it's got an accent doesn't make it good. HFPA. The movie was aggressively atrocious and she wasn't much better. No not much to say there but damn it…I just hate those token nominations.3. back in 1997?Yes you're SUPPOSED to be laughing at that. That idea's just as silly as thinking for Best Picture – Comedy/MusicalThe experience I went through in sitting through an entire screening of the abysmal is more worthy of entry into the Screenings of My Life series but I'll cut to the quick and be short here. This movie should sweep the Goddamned Razzies that's how bad is. John Lennon is happy Mark David Chapman shot him that's how bad ?Due to the risk of the next eight paragraphs of this column turning into a hate-filled semi-intelligible rant not seen since the glory days of the Unabomber let's just move on. Other thoughts on the Globe nominations well…Nothing for but since I am BARELY keeping myself from going and seeing the film by myself (promised a fellow worshipper at the Church of Cusack I wouldn't see it without him). I won't judge anything without having seen it first. Only fair. I just hope I'm getting my due and proper for writing a column on how the HFPA fucked up their nominations this year and not mentioned this getting a nod people. I will give the Globes some credit though.……Good job nominating Clint Eastwood's song and score for in their respective categories. Even you guys can't fuck up everything. HFPA. Congratulations. Well tomorrow's the SAG nominations so it's a new day in the Oscar season. Hopefully my favorite unappreciated trinity of films can get some love there. Probably not. After all.

"Colin McKay gives us a behind the scenes look at Canada?s Privacy ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 12:16:12

Colin McKay is one smart guy and as experienced as they go in social media. He’s been blogging as since 2003. Earlier this year he launched a second communicate focusing on government communications and social media. Colin also has a day job as the Acting Director of Communications at the Office of the. And he’s used that position to launch what is arguably the most successful example of a government communicate so far in Canada - the. Colin was our guest at measure month. During his presentation and in a lengthy question and answer session he offered a candid view of how he managed to obtain the give to initiate the Privacy Commissioner’s blog and how he sustains it. How has Colin been successful in introducing blogging and other social media tactics into a government environment that has been slow to include social media? His Third Tuesday discussion provided some practical tips and observations based on his undergo. Build a business case “I’d been spending four years slamming my head against a wall bringing up social media and building some sort of conversation within a much larger department. And I think everyone who’s worked in a bureaucracy realizes at some inform or another that there are institutional barriers to social media - fairly strong ones. But what I realized coming into a smaller organization like the Privacy Commissioner … if you register an organization that has at least one or two people who recognize the benefits of social media if you build a strong business inspect … something that drives along a business inspect copy that identifies risk and how you will apologise assay you can convince … people to try something new…” “At the Privacy Commissioner. I don’t have a attend or a Deputy attend. I undergo an Agent of Parliament. That means that my description of risk and my expression of the way that I would mitigate that risk and deal with crises as they evolved did not undergo to arrive the same level of sophistication they would with a normal government department with a department with far more people far more issues and the possibility of many more things either on a policy or a schedule aim going do by.” “What you have to be able to do is to say that we’re going to limit our investigate to this environment to this particular policy to this particular schedule and here are the five ways it could go do by and here are the ways we’re going to kill this experiment if it does go do by.” “The first thing I did when I arrived [at the Privacy Commissioner’s Office] was I took a look at what we were doing in terms of communications and marketing and what we doing to reach out to specific audiences and whether we were missing audiences. It seemed to me that we had our stakeholder relations program down pat … and we were speaking to them through our traditional programs. … But we didn’t have any popular aspect and we didn’t have any techniques that would approach populate who thought of privacy from a different point of view. …That was my access point to declare that there are some fairly easy to deploy technologies that ordain let us communicate with these populate in an experimental way.” “… communicators have to stop taking IT people’s denials and the assertion that the infrastructure needs to remain secure as gospel. … There’s no reason why a department couldn’t entertain a communicate externally and link it to their internally hosted server. There’s no reason why the software can’t be deployed. It’s so easy there are twelve year old Russian boys doing it. If there’s a thirty-five year old man or woman telling you that the IT policies state that you can’t do it because of the integrity of your network then they’ve got some worries about their network that cerebrate to really poor construction and serious structural weaknesses. In which inspect you undergo to work through your business case with the IT management to alter them understand the options available and not depend on your IT people to change it for you.” “I was surprised from the first day we were getting positive comments. We haven’t gotten a lot of mention e-mail. … What has appeared are a lot of supportive messages and a lot of comments desire. “I was giving a presentation to my children’s grade school today and I saw your video and I’m going to pass it along to the teacher to show to the class. Which is exactly the sort of ‘home run’ I was hoping for.” Something else I took away from Colin’s presentation was that information that is relevant does not have to be immediate. I think that government communicators shouldn’t conclude overwhelmed by the choices offered by social media they should focus on what content they have to put out and how to effectively do so.

"Everyone Knows Your Caption's a Clip-On: Behind the Scenes of the ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 18:15:13

today Daniel Radosh the results of Matt Diffee’s caption-contest investigation: What were the original captions before they were stripped to alter way for America’s merry endeavors? Drew Dernavich (who with the contest winner about the “Everyone knows your parrot’s a clip-on” drawing for Emdashes) contributes two and Tom Cheney and Frank Cotham have one each. I especially like the amusing juxtaposition of the winning. Radosh Anti-Caption oppose and original captions. Also in humor today the latest edition of thoroughly lovable comedian “My Secret Public Journal” has a sharp election-season observation: Rudy Giuliani kind of scares me. I kind of feel like Rudy thinks 9/11 is his birthday. He gets that excited be on his face and buys himself a cake and lights two candles and watches them burn down. And then he looks around and says. “What do I get?” And his advisors are like “$15 million in speaking fees!” and he’s desire. “That’s even better than last 9/11!” And in the Wall St. Journal there’s a of William F. Buckley’s book Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription that parades some New Yorker cliches so sleepy they’re unfit to operate heavy machinery. If you say only three things about the magazine say these three! It’s a surefire crowd-pleaser. I welcome tips questions and comments about The New Yorker past and present plus related events links typeface sightings. &c. To contact the magazine or send a submission.
